Description:
The land of the Al-Jamasin cemetery
The land of the Al-Jammasin cemetery is the last remaining part of the Palestinian village of Al-Jammasin, which was depopulated in 1948 during the Nakba. For decades, this land has remained a symbol of identity and resilience, despite the challenges and dangers it has faced.
The cemetery extends over an area estimated at about 2.5 dunams, and is located north of Tel Aviv-Yafo, at the intersection of “HaLachah” Street and the area known today as “Babli”.
the past:
Threats and attempts at obliteration: In 1987, the cemetery land was illegally sold in a deal that threatened the sanctity and historical significance of the site. However, thanks to God and the efforts of honorable citizens of Jaffa, this deal was thwarted and canceled. Despite this, the money paid was not recovered, resulting in accumulated debts on the endowment land amounting to approximately four and a half million shekels.
In 2020, the Islamic Waqf was surprised to find accumulated debts, which led to the seizure of all Muslim Waqf properties in the city of Jaffa.
present:
Thanks to the efforts of the Islamic endowment and the support of the local community, the debt was fully paid off within two years. Ownership of the land was restored to Muslims by legal and historical right, and the cemetery remains a living testament to our Islamic heritage in the heart of the city. Today, the cemetery is officially designated as a burial site, and no construction is permitted on it, thus granting it a special status in preserving identity and dignity.
