Endowment information:
Name of the endowment:
Abd Rabb al-Nabi Cemetery
Description:
Abd Rabbo al-Nabi Cemetery in Jaffa It is one of the most prominent historical Islamic landmarks that has been subjected to serious violations, but it still holds a strong symbolic place in the city's memory.
Location and date:
- The cemetery is located next to the Hilton Hotel on the Jaffa beach, north of the historic Manshiyya neighborhood.
- It contained hundreds of graves, but in the 1970s, it was sold by the government's trustees committee, and the graves were bulldozed to build the hotel and public park.
Violations and obliteration:
- All the evidence that proved the Islamic identity of the place was destroyed, and only one evidence remains, belonging to Haj Ismail Baraka, who died in 1361 AH, more than 114 years ago.
- In recent years, the cemetery has been subjected to further violations, including setting fire to the adjacent chapel and demolishing part of its wall.
Symbolism and memory:
- Despite the destruction, the cemetery remained a symbol of the Nakba and displacement, and a witness to attempts to obliterate the Islamic and Arab identity of Jaffa.
- The rare photograph documenting the remaining witness is a nineteenth-century masterpiece, and it underscores the depth of Islamic history in the city.
